The new cable will increase the reliability of our electricity network and offer increased capacity for future power needs.
About the project
Wellington Electricity (we*) is your local lines company responsible for managing the poles, wires and equipment that safely deliver electricity to Wellington, Porirua, and the Hutt Valley.
In 2020, we carefully excavated a small area along the northwestern edge of Mount Street Cemetery to carry out essential repairs to a century-old electrical cable. However, given its age, we suspect that the rest of the buried cable might be deteriorating.
Rather than trying to replace it in its current location, we've decided to run a brand new cable elsewhere. This means we won't need to access or disturb any part of the cemetery now, or in the future.
Stages
The project is split into four sections; shown on the map below with the expected dates for each. To avoid disruption to staff and students of the university, Section 1 takes place during the mid-trimester break.
Cable routes shown are approximate and provided for reference only.
How the work might affect you
To keep you and our crews safe, we'll have traffic management in place while we dig up Mount Street, The Terrace, and Maurice Terrace. This might cause a few short-term delays, but we'll do our best to keep disruption to a minimum.
If access to your property is going to be affected, we'll contact you directly to let you know what's happening. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we carry out this essential work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Work will be carried out on weekdays from August to November 2024. Typical work hours are:
- Site setup: 7.30am - 9am
- Works: 9am - 4.30pm
- Site takedown: 4.30pm - 6pm.
Any excavations will be secured at the end of each day, but as with any work site, please keep children and curious pets away.
Some noise will be inevitable, particularly as we dig up the road. All work will take place during the day to make sure we comply with local and national noise regulations.
We won’t be working in the cemetery itself – only alongside it in the existing pathway that is already disturbed ground. However, our crews will use the following methods to protect the cemetery:
- Installation of a temporary barrier between the path and cemetery
- Precise and careful excavation techniques
- Dust and sediment runoff mitigation methods
- An Accidental/Archaeological Discovery Protocol.
We'll dig the cable trench as far from the cemetery boundary as possible to reduce the chance of impacting unknown burials.
No. As we're not working on any existing cables, we shouldn't need to turn off the power.
